Dear all,

I'm happy to be able to share with you the public release of the FSFE's
guide to machine readable expressions for copyright and licensing
information, which you can find here:

  https://reuse.software/

This represents our first public release, and over the coming months
(and years!), we plan to develop this guide further as we receive more
input, provide additional examples, and put the guide into practical use.

One of the issues we know needs further elaboration is the use of version
control systems (vcs) for keeping a record of copyright information. We
have seen both pros and cons, and many different positions on this
practice. For now, we place some conditions on how this can be done,
but these will surely evolve.

We believe this, as well as what follows from our other practices, will
also require some additional tooling to make these practices as easy
and as attractive as possible for developers.

Looking forward to talking to all of you about this work, and you may
also encounter me or others from the FSFE talking about this and
related projects at conferences close to you :-)
