Indian language of the Indo-Iranian family, spoken by the inhabitants of
the Indian state of Assam. The language is closely related to the Oriya
and Bengali languages. Assamese is spoken in the valley of the Brahmaputra
River, from the borders of Koch Bihâr in the west to Dibrugarh in the
east. 14,604,000 or more in all countries; a few in Bangladesh.
